The backbone to a successful brewery and restaurant is not just delicious food and beer – it’s the people that make your experience memorable by offering fast, efficient and friendly service with a smile. Our crew is comprised of year-round locals, but we rely heavily on our “seasonal individuals” -- those drawn to the allure of Skagway, its history, and of course, good beer!
MIKE HEALY, OWNER/GENERAL MANAGER
Mike was born and raised in Yankton, SD where he spent a great deal of time laboring on his family farm and working construction. He earned a degree in Business Administration from Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD. Before moving to Skagway, Mike was a hotel manager in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
A sense of adventure and a desire for self-employment landed him in Skagway in 2003, and he hasn’t looked back since. He has opened several businesses in town, and utilizing his construction knowledge, has constructed and remodeled several buildings in Skagway. Mike has been active in the community volunteering on several boards and commissions. He currently is the President of the Skagway Development Corporation, a non-profit organization devoted to helping develop small business, enhance the economy, and offer assistance to smaller non-profit organizations.
Mike has a love for traveling and the outdoors. He spends his free time kayaking, hiking, skiing, running, and of course, quality control of our delicious house-made ales.
CLAIRE BARRETT, OPERATIONS MANAGER
Claire was born and raised in Wisconsin and has been involved in the restaurant industry since she was 17. She earned a bachelor degree in Business Administration from Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin. A born people-pleaser and lover of good food and beverage—thanks to her parents for her young exposure to a wide array of cuisines (and their amazing cooking skills!)—Claire found a job she truly loved in serving and bartending while attending college and beyond. She quickly moved up the ranks gaining management experience with her knack for seeing areas of improvement and ambition to make change.
Claire has found her niche (and her husband) in Skagway. She enjoys hiking, camping, cooking and seeing the world through the eyes of their son, Henry. Treating it like her own, the Skagway Brewing Company has become her second home. Claire has been with us since we opened our doors July 4, 2007 and looks forward to remaining an integral part of the growth, success and good times had by all (employees and patrons!) here at the Skagway Brewing Company.
TREVOR CLIFFORD, HEAD BREWER
Born and raised in Brainerd, Minnesota, Trevor’s brewing history dates back to December of 1997 when Santa left a beer kit beneath the tree. This lead not only to the first batch of beer, but also the discovery of an affinity for fermentation. Brewing in various closets and basements over the next ten years—be it his home state of Minnesota, his wife’s home state of Alaska, or what they considered the compromise, Oregon—he honed his art, enjoying the fabrication and tweaking of equipment as much as the beer itself.
In 2007 he was offered the chance to turn his hobby into a profession. With very little debate, he and his wife Courtenay enthusiastically returned to Alaska where he has been involved with designs of our brewery from the ground up. With his passion stronger than ever, he continues to revel in the process and happily brews ales for thirsty Skagway locals and visitors alike.
DAN "DOC" NELSON, CHEF
Also hailing from the great state of Minnesota is our Head Chef Dan Nelson, more commonly known as "Doc.” In 2003, Doc made his first appearance in Skagway but it wasn’t until 2007 that he made it his permanent residence. He has been with Skagway Brewing since 2008 when he originally picked up a part-time gig bartending. However, his love for creating food and seeing the potential of this small pub had him eagerly jumping back to his roots—in the kitchen—not long after. With 20+ years of restaurant experience in Italian, Mexican, Thai food and American pub fare, he has created the flavor profiles our patrons have come to love and crave.
